North Dodge has it's share of crime. For the most part, it's crimes of opportunity and domestic disputes but it can include forcible burglaries, sex crimes and more.
We need both individual input and communal input to help the crime rate decrease and we need to have a direct channel to Tucson Police Department. TPD needs input in order to prioritize what areas to patrol and what is going on within those areas. How many of us are guilty of not reporting mail box theft, minor vandalism to our properties or a suspicious person? By not reporting incidents like these, TPD has no clue they've occurred and no reason to put more patrols around here. They'll go to the neighborhoods that do tell them! |
Attend Neighborhood Association Meetings
This is where you can meet your neighbors and TPD and discuss what YOUR concerns are and find help to resolve them. Multi-Unit Properties Become Part of the "Crime-Free Multi-Housing Project"
This is simply a TERRIFIC project to assist landlords, property managers and even tenants to make their properties free of crime. The benefits are tremendous to everyone involved with the property and the entire neighborhood. This is designed for properties with three or more units but I'm sure whoever is currently running it in Tucson would be happy to assist and guide property owners or managers with concerns or questions they may have even if they only have a single or double unit. Form Neighborhood Watch Groups Hopes are once the NA gets off the ground, we'll be looking into groups all over the neighborhood. We'll be sure to keep things updated here once things are up and running. Make North Dodge "Squeak"!
The old adage "The squeaky wheel gets the grease" is all too true. Apathy and the attitude that someone else will do it, will keep things just the way they are. If North Dodge wants more police presence and active participation, residents and businesses NEED to report even the small incidents. Here's a link to report crime online. They do NOT accept major crimes reporting online. This is specifically for the smaller stuff that is seen around North Dodge daily. |
Attend TPD Fort Lowell/Country Club Crime Meetings The first FLCC meeting was held July 29, 2019 and modeled after the wildly successful and long ongoing Alvernon Grant Initiative Meetings (AGI) (see below). This is a forum to bring residents, businesses and organizations together to discuss crime in the area, to help police spot trends and for residents to receive advice and be able to speak directly to police. This first meeting was chock-a-block full of interesting and informative information. As with AGI there will always be at least one TPD officer present. We are so lucky to have this starting up! All future meetings will be held on the last Monday of the month, from 6-7 p.m., at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 3201 E. Presidio Road. Go. Attend. Please. AGI Meetings Alvernon Grant Iniative Meetings were originally formed around 2005 to combat a huge meth problem that was plaguing the neighborhoods surrounding the Grant and Alvernon intersection. Neighbors and Neighborhoods came together to do something about it and it got done. AGI has now evolved into now mainly being crime concerns for these neighborhoods and at least TWO Tucson Police Officers are present at every meeting. Not only can you learn all kinds of stuff, you can contribute too. Meetings are on the second Tuesday of each month from 6-7 pm at the Emmanuel Church, 1825 N Alvernon Way. Please do keep in mind, North Dodge is not "officially" part of the coalition so North Dodge folk would be attending as guests. Go. Attend. Please. Report Mail Theft, Tampering and Vandalism
Another thing North Dodge has rashes of is mail theft, tampering and vandalism. PLEASE DO NOT close your neighbor's mail box thinking you are doing them a favor! Once you do that, they no longer know that someone has been in it. They may have had an important piece of mail stolen or think they were bypassed by the thief/vandal. If you want it to stop, EACH and EVERY time your mail box is tampered with, you should take the few moments to report it to USPS and/or TPD! This is a serious crime and they WILL put people around the neighborhood to catch who is doing this! You can call, 1-877-876-2455 (press 3), or file an online report for assorted issues including mail theft. For mailbox vandalism, there's a different page. Links to both below: |
Harden The Target Tucson Police have been preaching this for years but sometimes we lose site of it. This is the simple stuff of locking our doors and windows and not creating attractions for criminal behavior. Common sense stuff. You have it -- use it. Keep Your Property Presentable and Tidy
There is direct correlation that neighborhoods that are run-down and uncared for will have a higher crime rate. It doesn't take a genius that neighborhoods that care about their appearance will attract better quality tenants which benefits residents and landlords alike. More on this on our Code Enforcement page Report Tagging
Nothing says gangs are around much more than tagging. Gangs WILL most certainly attract other gangs too! If it's small enough that you can take care of it yourself, still take a photo and send it in acknowledging that you've taken care of it. It helps TPD determine where gang activity is occurring and can help build a case for future prosecution for vandalism. They're very quick about getting out to it but tagging that includes racial or hate tones, they it make a priority. Light Up the Night For pennies a year, the best thing you can do to keep peeping Toms or burglars away from your home is to keep an outside light on. Another affordable alternative is a solar-powered motion detector exterior light. They run about $40 at the big box stores (probably on Amazon too). This is a good way to light up a driveway or carport if there's any movement. Say Hello! If you're working in your front yard, walking your dog, jogging or whatever, say hello! It never hurts to interact with neighbors but if this is someone you're feeling a bit suspicious of, you've now alerted them that you've seen them, you've made eye contact and you could describe them. Obviously, anything we do we need to do with care and if someone appears to be under the influence or perhaps mentally unstable, don't do anything except call TPD right away but burglars and baddies go for walks and scout out potential targets and often try to blend in and can do so very well. Just knowing someone has noticed them can send them over to the next block (or hopefully neighborhood!). |
Neighborhood Support Network (NSN) Neighborhoods Police Incidents
If it is a registered neighborhood in Tucson, the police incidents are listed here. This is a good place to get an idea of how North Dodge is comparing to nearby neighborhoods. Neighbors by Ring This is cool new tool but it's only available as as app for mobile devices. From their website: "Get real-time crime and safety alerts from your neighbors and local law enforcement. Always know when and where crime happens in your area, and share updates to keep you and your community safe. " You are required to provide your address but it doesn't show that to anyone but instead provides an area that's considered your neighbors. All can post but those with Ring devices can also post footage of what they filmed. I'm amazed how many people around my area have a Ring doorbell or other device! I also noticed a police alert that was within that area for a serious incident. You don't have to own a Ring device to be a part of this community and receive alerts. Pretty cool. Sorry no link :-( . You'll have to go to your preferred App Store but it's free! |
NSN Police Incident Listings for North Dodge
This is updated daily and has up to 100 of the last police incidents in the North Dodge neighborhood. Nextdoor
Because the NDNA isn't a real person with a real address, we can't join Nextdoor as a participant but everybody that is a resident of North Dodge sure can. Apparently, it is a place for North Dodge residents to reach out to one another and I would imagine a great place to learn of crime incidents and discuss this among neighbors. |
Arizona Daily Star Crime Incidents
This is another great resource for looking up crime incidents. Registered Sex Offenders
It appears this stays pretty current. Here's a map showing where registered sex offenders are living in Tucson. You can zoom in to North Dodge.
TPD Home Security Survey
This is NOT a survey in the sense that you answer questions but instead provides the tools for you to "survey" your own home and property to help prevent any crime incidents befalling you.
This is a fabulous "tool" to refer to to make sure you've done all you can. |
Convicted Burglers Share Tips
A very interesting article compiled by interviewing 86 convicted burglars. |
Just What is Larceny? Larceny is defined as the “unlawful taking and carrying away of the property of another person, with the intent to permanently deprive them of its use.” It is simply another word for theft but because it's not used in everyday language, it confuses many of us. Robbery is stealing something that belongs to another person but he or she will often use force, some form of threat, intimidation or a deadly weapon. Burglary is when the perpetrator enters a building without consent. These are the most simplistic definitions but I hope the confusion surrounding "Larceny" has been cleared up! |
